Doctoral thesis on Bioeconomics of Reindeer Herding

In the thesis dynamic economic-ecological model of reindeer herding system was developed and solved. The developed model is the most detailed optimization model used for reindeer or any other similar herbivore. The model was also validated and parameterized to describe the northernmost Finland. The main results show that in order to study sustainable and economically viable reindeer management, both ecological and economic factors must be taken into account, as they strongly affect the solutions and management recommendations. The results also show that calf slaughtering is economically sensible slaughtering strategy and that the economically optimal steady-state lichen biomass can be surprisingly low.
